My wife or my Country?
A scene from the play Patriot by Beyond Borders on the 2nd of November at Bishops College Auditorium. That's Lasantha David playing the protagonist David Senanayake and Mayanthi De Silva as his wife.
For a review of the play check out Chavie's post on it. He basically sums it up.
The play tries to explore the concept of patriotism and how it plays out in Sri Lanka today. I used to call my self a 'patriot' when I was younger. I think the ideal is a little outdated now. I just believe humanity is above patriotism or nationalism. What about you guys? Would you consider yourself patriots and why?

Oh ur back :D great pic. Hmm...I would say I'm a patriot when anyone disses or undervalues my country. Otherwise, I'd chose humanity. IF that makes sense... :s
Hey,
Great pic!
Can you send us some of the others?
Yeah, I think the concept of 'patriotism' is outdated to the Colombo crowd as they don't have an irrational perception of it. But I think it's still relevant in other areas, such as the south.
But at least it got a lot of younger people thinking about the current political situation.
Lovely pictures Aamina :D
I missed it, dammit! Looking forward for more :)
Cheers!
on patriotism, one can do no better than to read G.K Chesterton:
"My country, right or wrong," is a thing that no patriot would think of saying except in a desperate case. It is like saying, "My mother, drunk or sober."
:) loving one's country and loving one's Government are two different things ...
hope you are settling in fine ... keep in touch
Hey Aamina, it was great to finally meet you at the play! :D
I agree with you that patriotism is a somewhat outdated concept. But in a diverse society, that love for the country and national identity might be the only 'glue' holding everything together. For example, India has so many languages, religions, tribes etc., but they're all united by their love for the motherland. We don't see that kind of patriotism across society in this country, and this is why we're not really a united country. This needs to change, IMHO.
Thanks for the mention! :D
awesome pic.
